How do I convert a WebP image to JPG?

Drop the .webp files into the free Xtools image converter, set Convert to JPG (or PNG to keep transparency) and press Download or Download all (.zip). Up to 50 files at once, nothing uploaded. On Windows you can also open the file in Paint and Save as JPEG; on Mac, open it in Preview and use File, Export.

WebP is great for websites but awkward everywhere else: some upload forms, older editing apps and print shops still reject it. Converting back to JPG or PNG takes seconds.

Method 1: In your browser (bulk, no upload)

  1. Open the image converter. It reads WebP as well as writing it.
  2. Drop your .webp files onto the box, up to 50 at a time.
  3. Set Convert to to JPG for photos, or PNG to keep a transparent background.
  4. For JPG, set Quality to 90 or higher and pick a Background color for any transparent areas.
  5. Press Download or Download all (.zip).

It works on Windows, Mac, Chromebook, iPhone and Android, and the images stay on your device.

Method 2: Paint on Windows

  1. Right-click the .webp file and choose Open with → Paint.
  2. Choose File → Save as → JPEG picture (or PNG).

Fine for one image at a time. Paint cannot batch convert.

Method 3: Preview on Mac

  1. Open the .webp file in Preview.
  2. Choose File → Export, set Format to JPEG or PNG, and save.

To convert several at once, select them all in Preview’s sidebar before exporting.

Method 4: dwebp on the command line

Google’s dwebp decoder turns WebP into PNG:

dwebp image.webp -o image.png

FAQ

Questions people ask

Why do images save as WebP?

Many websites serve WebP because it is smaller and loads faster. When you right-click and save, you get the file the site sent, which is often WebP rather than JPG.

Should I convert WebP to JPG or PNG?

JPG for photos you want to share, upload or print. PNG if the image has a transparent background or sharp text, since JPG cannot store transparency.

Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?

A little, because JPG is lossy too. Set quality to 90 or higher for a result that looks identical. Choose PNG if you need a lossless copy.

What happens to the transparent background when I convert to JPG?

JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid color, white by default. Pick another Background color in the converter, or convert to PNG to keep the transparency.

Can I convert animated WebP to GIF?

Not with the browser converter, which saves a still image. Use a dedicated animation tool for that.

Is it safe to convert WebP online?

With the Xtools converter, the conversion happens in your browser and the file is never uploaded, so it is as private as converting on your own computer.
