Method 1: Click the Strikethrough Button on the Ribbon
The most visual way to apply strikethrough in Microsoft Word:
- Highlight the text you want to cross out.
- Ensure you are on the Home tab of the top ribbon.
- In the Font section (next to Bold, Italic, and Underline), click the Strikethrough icon (displayed as the lowercase letters
abwith a horizontal line through them: ab). - To remove it, select the text again and click the same button.
Method 2: How to Do Double Strikethrough in Word
Microsoft Word includes an exclusive Double Strikethrough effect that places two parallel lines through your words:
- Select the words or numbers you wish to format.
- Press Ctrl + D on Windows (or Cmd + D on Mac) to open the Font dialog window. (Alternatively, click the small launcher arrow in the bottom-right corner of the Font section on the Home ribbon).
- Under the Effects section, check the box labeled Double strikethrough.
- Review the result in the Preview box and click OK.
Note: If you need double strikethrough for social media, Discord, or web forms, Word's formatting will not transfer. Use our Strikethrough Text Generator and pick the "Double Strikethrough" style instead.
Method 3: Assign a Custom 1-Key Shortcut in Word (Pro Tip)
By default on Windows, Word lacks a single hotkey like Ctrl + S for strikethrough. You can create your own permanent shortcut in less than 60 seconds:
- Click File in the top-left corner > Options.
- Select Customize Ribbon on the left sidebar.
- At the bottom of the window, next to Keyboard shortcuts, click the Customize... button.
- In the Categories list, select Home Tab.
- In the Commands list on the right, scroll down and click Strikethrough.
- Click into the text box labeled Press new shortcut key.
- Press your preferred key combination on your keyboard (for example, Ctrl + Shift + S or Alt + S).
- Check that Currently assigned to shows "[unassigned]", then click the Assign button in the bottom left.
- Click Close and then OK.
Now, pressing your custom hotkey will instantly toggle strikethrough anywhere in Word!
Method 4: Word Online (Microsoft 365) and Word Mobile
Formatting in web and mobile versions of Microsoft Word:
- Word for the Web (browser): Highlight your text and click the Strikethrough icon on the Home ribbon. You can also press Alt + Shift + 5 on Chrome or Edge.
- Word Mobile App (iOS / Android): Select your text, tap the Home menu in the ribbon bar at the bottom, tap More Formatting, and tap Strikethrough.
Method 5: How to Undo or Remove Strikethrough in Word
To clear strikethrough formatting and return text to standard body copy:
- Select the struck-through words and click the ab icon on the ribbon again.
- Press Ctrl + Spacebar (Windows) or Cmd + Option + Spacebar (Mac) to clear all manual character formatting and restore the default paragraph font style.
