How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?
Copy the video link (tap Share, then Copy link in the app), paste it into the free Xtools YouTube thumbnail downloader and press Get thumbnails. Press Download JPG under the 1280 × 720 image for the HD version, or pick a smaller size. Works on iPhone, Android and desktop, with no app or extension.
YouTube has no download button for thumbnails, but every public video’s thumbnail is a normal image file. You only need the video link.
The fast way: use the thumbnail downloader
- Copy the link. In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link. On a computer, copy the address bar. Watch links,
youtu.belinks, Shorts, live streams and embed links all work. - Paste it. Open the free YouTube thumbnail downloader, paste the link and press Get thumbnails.
- Save it. The sharpest size is highlighted. Press Download JPG, or WebP for a smaller file, or Copy link to grab the image URL.
Sizes YouTube never made for that video are marked Not generated, so you always know you have the best copy that exists.
On iPhone
- In the YouTube app, tap Share → Copy link.
- Open the downloader in Safari, paste and press Get thumbnails.
- Tap Download JPG. Safari saves it to Files → Downloads.
- Want it in Photos? Press and hold the preview and tap Save to Photos.
On Android
- Tap Share → Copy link in the YouTube app.
- Paste the link into the downloader in Chrome and press Get thumbnails.
- Tap Download JPG. It lands in Downloads and shows in Google Photos under Library → Downloads.
On Windows or Mac
Copy the link from the address bar, paste it into the downloader and click Download JPG. The file is named after the video and goes to your Downloads folder. Paste up to 10 links, one per line, to grab a batch.
The manual way (no tool)
Every thumbnail lives at a predictable address:
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg
Swap VIDEO_ID for the 11 characters after v= (or after youtu.be/ or /shorts/). Open it, then right-click or
long-press and save. If you get a small grey image, that video has no HD thumbnail; change maxresdefault to
hqdefault. All the file names are in the YouTube thumbnail URL guide.
Which size to download
| You want | Pick |
|---|---|
| The sharpest copy | 1280 × 720 (maxresdefault) |
| A clean widescreen image without bars | 1280 × 720 or 320 × 180 |
| Something that always exists | 480 × 360 (hqdefault) |
| A small file for a website | Any size as WebP |

FAQ
Questions people ask
Can I download a YouTube thumbnail without any tool?
Yes. Open https://i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg in your browser, replacing VIDEO_ID with the 11 characters after v= in the video link, then save the image. If that shows a grey placeholder, try hqdefault.jpg instead.
Where do downloaded thumbnails go on iPhone?
Safari saves them to the Files app, in the Downloads folder. To put one in Photos instead, press and hold the preview image and tap Save to Photos.
Where do downloaded thumbnails go on Android?
Into the Downloads folder. Google Photos shows them under Library, Downloads.
Can I download the thumbnail of a private or deleted video?
Usually not. YouTube removes the thumbnails when a video goes private or is deleted, so there is nothing left to download. Unlisted videos still work if you have the link.
Can I download several thumbnails at once?
Yes. Paste up to 10 video links into the downloader, one per line, and every video gets its own set of sizes.
Can I use a downloaded thumbnail in my own video?
Not without the creator’s permission. Thumbnails are copyrighted. Saving one for reference, research or a mockup is fine; reposting it as your own is not.
