Which Suno format is best: MP3, WAV or MP4?
Use WAV for releases and editing, because it is uncompressed and gives distributors the best master. Use MP3 for listening on your phone, in the car or in a music app, since it is about ten times smaller. Use the MP4 video for Reels, Shorts and TikTok. The audio inside the MP4 is the full song.
Every Suno song can be saved in more than one format. They sound the same to most ears, but they are made for different jobs.
The three formats at a glance
| Format | Quality | Typical size (3 min song) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| WAV | Uncompressed, the master | About 30 MB | Releases, mixing, mastering |
| MP3 | Compressed (192 to 320 kbps) | 4 to 7 MB | Phone, car, music library |
| MP4 video | Compressed audio plus a picture | 5 to 15 MB | TikTok, Reels, Shorts, sharing |
Sizes are typical, not exact; they change with the song’s length.
WAV: for anything you will release
WAV keeps the audio exactly as Suno generated it. Music distributors ask for WAV, and it is the right file to load into a DAW if you want to mix, master or add vocals. On Suno, WAV is available when you download your own songs on a paid plan, and it counts as the same download as the MP3 of that song.
MP3: for listening
MP3 is the format every phone, car stereo and music app plays. At 192 kbps it sounds close to the original for normal listening and takes a fraction of the space. It is not a good master: once a song is an MP3, the detail that was removed cannot come back.
MP4: for social video
The MP4 is the song with its cover art as the picture. It is ready to post as a Reel, Short or TikTok, and it plays in any video player. The soundtrack is the whole song, not a preview.
How to turn a Suno song into an MP3
If a public song only offers a video, or you just want an MP3 for listening:
- Copy the song’s share link on Suno.
- Paste it into the free Suno song downloader and press Find song.
- Press Download MP3. Your browser takes the audio from the public MP4 and encodes a 192 kbps MP3, tagged with the title, artist, lyrics and cover art. It usually takes a few seconds and nothing is uploaded.
Which one should you pick?
- Putting the song on Spotify or Apple Music: WAV, from your own paid Suno account.
- Editing or remixing: WAV.
- Listening offline: MP3.
- Posting on social media: MP4.
- Song captions or a lyric video: MP4 plus the lyrics. See how to get Suno lyrics and cover art.
Every Suno download now counts against a monthly cap, so if you are paying for downloads, take all the formats you need in one go. The Suno download limit guide has the numbers.
FAQ
Questions people ask
Is Suno WAV better quality than MP3?
WAV is uncompressed, so it keeps every detail of the file Suno generated. MP3 throws away sound most people cannot hear to make the file much smaller. For listening the difference is hard to spot; for mixing, mastering or distribution, use WAV.
How do I convert a Suno MP4 to MP3?
Paste the song link into the free Xtools Suno downloader and press Download MP3. Your browser pulls the audio out of the public MP4 and encodes a 192 kbps MP3 with the title, artist, lyrics and cover art tagged in. Nothing is uploaded.
Which format should I upload to Spotify or Apple Music?
Distributors such as DistroKid and TuneCore ask for WAV. Download the WAV from your own song on a paid Suno plan; a 192 kbps MP3 is not a good master.
Which format is best for TikTok, Reels and Shorts?
The MP4 video. It already has the cover art as the picture and the song as the soundtrack, so you can post it as it is or drop it into an editor.
Why does Suno give an MP4 instead of an MP3 for some songs?
Suno streams many songs as video files, and public pages do not always publish an MP3. The MP4 soundtrack is the complete song, which is why a downloader can make an MP3 from it.
